The Professionals
Raymond Dibble is a mousy librarian who loves reading about the adventures of Bodie and Doyle, until a head injury leaved him convinced that he is Doyle.
One of the most interesting amnesia fics I’ve ever read, and a totally hilarious spy novel as well.
“Not real plans—phony ones. But that was okay, because the Russians knew they were phony and they were planning to sell them to the East Germans because they needed extra money to beef up the effort in Afghanistan. Glasnost has screwed the hell out of their military budget, too.”
“Okay, so we were selling shit to the Russkis so they could sell it to the East Germans who are idiots. Correct? Exactly what were we selling?”
“Just some schematics the boys in Washington sent over to look good under a microscope—they had it on a microchip.”
“And the Russkis knew it was crap?”
“Yessir.”
“And the East Germans?”
“Well, they might’ve figured it out, because they backed out of the sale at the last minute. So the KGB decided to peddle it to the Israelis who really only wanted it to leak to the Iranians as part of a package deal with the arms thing. Kind of like a commission on the sale.”
“But the Israelis didn’t know the U.S. knew about it, right?”
“Well, that’s hard to say. They don’t like dealing with the KGB at the best of times, and they sure as hell hate the Iranians, so they could’ve been double-crossing them. There’s some evidence they were going to pass it to the Iraqis at the same time.” He shrugged. “You know how it is.”
A Thousand Beautiful Things
Mar 30, 2005
This story is now one of my favourite Harry Potter fics, second only to Lust over Pendle. I have to admit, I can’t resist Redemption Of Draco Malfoy fics, especially when Draco is really well-written. There are one or two moments when story-Draco doesn’t match canon-Draco, but by and large his transformation into a decent human being is shown as a logical progression from the events in the plot.
There’s a short follow-up story, Harry Potter and the Slytherin-Coloured Lamborghini.
If you were interested in the friendship between Draco and Gregory in the story, there a short sidestory, Autumn Can Really Hang You Up the Most, set sometime post-war.
Update: A Thousand Beautiful Things now has a sequel. I’ve only read the first chapter of Delicate Sound of Thunder, but so far, it looks to be as good as its prequel.
Further Update: I just finished Delicate Sound of Thunder, and it really was just as good as A Thousand Beautiful Things. I think my favourite part was Hermione and Snape working together against A.W.L. The scene with Daniel in Draco’s apartment at the end was awfully funny, too. And the revelation of what Draco’s secret DE past was really suprised and horrified me, but in a good way. And Daniel’s such a sweetie…you know, let’s just say that I liked everything about this story. Because I really did.
There’s also a very short epilogue to Delicate Sound of Thunder (ETA: Site seems to be down, so this epilogue is unavailable at the moment.)
Angle and Plane
Feb 26, 2005
Deep Space Nine
Followed by Part Two and Part Three
Introduces two very good OCs: Nora Briggs and Nam Dietzbader.
Odo accepts a very dangerous mission for the Federation, but what unexpected consequences will come of it? Romance, cello concerts, action ‘n adventure, much whup-ass, chases, mysterious Section 31 operatives, Quark crying, near-death experiences, a blue-haired Dominion resistance fighter, a scenic but dangerous galactic spaceport and promises to give Morn a pedicure…never a dull moment in “Angle and Plane.” And if you liked this story, be sure to check out its sequel…
Circle and Spiral (Prologue), One, Two, Three, Four
Angle and Plane is very long (300K) and Circle and Spiral is even longer (500K). But they’re both good.
Circle and Spiral has one of the few good spy plots I’ve seen that actually hangs together.
