Third Person by Julad
Oh. my. God. This fic is so amazingly, perfectly Ray and Fraser. Set early in the series, after Eclipse and I Coulda Been a Defendent. As good as most due South slash is in terms of characterization, I’ve never seen Fraser and Ray more in-character than they are here.
I reload and look around. “Can you tell where they are now?”
“I’d be more effective without your irksome commentary.”
“*What*? Fraser, I can’t shoot them if I can’t *see* anything!”
“Is there an afterlife authority I can report you to?”
More bullets. I crouch lower, belt off six rounds into the blackness just to feel the gun firing in my hand. “What the fuck are you talking about, you stupid freak?”

The link is to her main Tolkien fic page, just scroll down. Quite a few of the links have been down for months, so I’ve also linked to them directly below.
At the end of the Second Age, Elrond and Isildur are friends, but that friendship is strained by the politics of tha day. Not to mention the coming war.
The main part of this series is a multi-part WIP called Shieldmates:
- Prologue
- Chapter One: The Gathering
- Chapter Two: Dagorlad
- Chapter Three: Siege Planning
- Chapter Four: At the Morannon
- Chapter Five: Môriul and Dreams
- Chapter Six: Trial of Faith
- Chapter Seven: Alienated Nations
- Chapter Eight: Choice of Targets
- Chapter Nine: Crossing the Line
- Chapter Ten: Neri Alveru
- Chapter Eleven: Drowning on Dry Land
(Chapters nine through eleven don’t seem to have been posted yet, despite being listed on the Shieldmates index page.)
There are also three related stories: Agaranna, A Day by the River, and Dark Surpassing Sun

“Rommie, I think you’re right.”
“Of course I’m right.” the ceiling said.
“I’m drunk.” Couldn’t feel his feet either. Or his tongue.
“I told you so.”
“Nobody likes a snotty starship!” Harper yelled at the ceiling.

Funny, and I want to say ’sweet’, but that’s not really the right word. ‘Happy’, maybe?
“Eat shit, punk,” the other bank robber said.
Jason punched him in the face and he slumped over with a grunt. “Not on my diet plan.”
“Let’s go,” Tim said.
Tim retrieved his grapple and spike strip and they flew away as the police arrived. “I could go for a burger, though,” Jason said.

Toad/m.
Okay, I could have sworn I recommended this ages ago. Very, very good. Sorry, ‘good’ seems to be the best I can do in terms of description today. Oh, there’s stuff about Toad’s tongue that you won’t want to miss.
There’s DVD-style commentary by the author, too.

I figure it’s time to change the look of the site again. I get bored with the look of a site very easily (especially when I designed it, because I’m intimately aware of all the flaws, all the problems I didn’t know how to solve…can you tell that I’m a perfectionist?)
Anyone have any complaints about the site the way it is now? It can be about the look of the site or the organisation, and it doesn’t have to be particularly constructive, although suggestions are welcome. If there are problems with the site the way it is, I’ll try to solve them for you in the new version; if not, I’ll re-design the site to suit myself.
Also, you may notice that the site is loading much, much faster than it has been. This is because I realized that retrieving all 200+ posts every time the main page loaded was slowing the site down (duh!) So now only 20 posts load on one page at a time; good for the front page, kind of annoying for the category pages.
This post will stay at the top of this page for a while, and new recs will appear underneath it.
Update: Okay, since there are no complaints, the site will be organized the same way but with a new look. But not for a while, because I’m going away for a couple of weeks. I should have a chance to leave you with a few new recs before I go, though.

My Big Breakup by Sabine
Scrubs
Yet another fic I can’t believe I never rec’d. Very true to the tone of the show, and even almost canon because you know there has to be something between those two. Bonus points for many mentions of Cox’s scary googly eyes.

Campaign by Shalott
I try to limit myself to rec’ing only the best story from one author in a fandom, but I can’t believe I haven’t rec’d this before. It’s true that I love Shalott’s One of a Thousand Roads and Waking from a Dream more than this story, but that’s no reason not to rec it.
Anyway, Campaign is great because no one writes Maximus/Commodus like Shalott.

The Big Picture by Speranza
Dead Zone
I’ve never heard of Dead Zone, but Speranza provides a good introduction to it before the story, so I wasn’t confused at all. This is set in the TV universe, and it’s plotted like an actual case like the ones they solve on the show. It’s quite a good mystery and a good story.

Hornblower Recs for All Occasions by FairestCat
The title should tell you that this isn’t a story; it’s a Hornblower rec list. I already put a link to this on the links page, but if you’re anything like me, you almost never check other people’s link pages unless you’re totally desperate. And this site deserves to be seen.
Basically, it’s a series of posts made on FairestCat’s livejournal; each post is a list of Hornblower fanfic recs with a theme: a particular pairing, stories set during a particular episode, that kind of thing. I’ve already read quite a few of the stories that she’s recommended, but I won’t be rec’ing all of them myself, so you might want to hop on over and take a look.
The stories feature a number of different pairings and ratings, so there should be something there for everyone.

Inamorata by Janis Cortese
Out of all of the Janis Cortese fics I could have recommended, I chose this one mostly because it features Midshipman Wellard, for whom I have a great fondness. Aside from that, it is one of her best stories, in my opinion, though fairly short.
For once, Archie is the hero with an adoring admirer.
NC-17 // PWP // Romance
The Gentlemanly Art of Conversation by Widget
Not too long, but not too short, either. Archie and Horatio attend a party, then to Vauxhall Gardens. They…talk.
NC-17 // Romance
All the King’s Men by Marna
This is actually the main story in a series; it has both prequels and sequels, but this is as good a place as any to start reading. Despite the numerous overlapping pairings, the tone manages to stay relatively faithful to its historical period. And I have to admit that I’m as much of a sucker for Edrington as for Archie Kennedy.
There’s also a reading guide.
