A Dish Served Cold by Kevin H. Robnett
Highlander/Star Trek
It’s 2369 and Richie Ryan has been in Starfleet for a long time. He’s estranged from Duncan and he’s never liked Adam Pierson, but he’s going to have a chance to work on that. Unfortunately, no slash in this story, but it has a tightly woven plot and it stays true to the format of Highlander, complete with flashbacks. Although the story is set in the Star Trek universe, I don’t think it’s necessary to know anything about Star Trek to enjoy the story. Although, how many Highlander fans can there be who haven’t seen at least a couple episodes of Star Trek?
A Dish Served Cold seems to have been written as a prequel to another fic, Finding Oneself, which I have yet to read. The author does an amazing job at creating a self-contained story with a satisfying resolution that nonetheless leaves threads hanging to be resolved in the next story.
Update: If anything, the sequel to A Dish Served Cold is even better. If you’ve finished this story, go read Finding Oneself. Great characters, especially Jono, who I would love to see a story about.

For the Love of Pete by Dewey
Despite the many, many obstacles facing them, Brian Kellam and Pete Jameson are determined to be together. I don’t know what else I can say without giving the plot away. There’s a lot of angst. Really–so much angst. I recommend starting this story when you have a few hours to spare – you probably won’t want to stop in the middle.
There are several other stories following For the Love of Pete:
- Brian’s Destruction is the expanded tale of what happened to Brian after Pete leaves, from the scene in the driveway to the court trial.
- Brian and Pete directly follows For the Love of Pete.
- The Power Within follows Brian and Pete, and is a WIP. So far chapters 1-22 are up.

I feel like I should apologize, since it’s been so long since I’ve recommended any stories, and even longer since I’ve rec’d any fanfiction, which is supposedly the main point of this site.
Unfortunately, it’s probably going to be even longer before I get around to reading any more fic, because my summer course at university is kicking my ass. I love it, but between the work and the heat, I haven’t had the energy or inclination to search out new sources of fic.
So, don’t anticipate many new recs before late August, after my exam. I hope everyone has a great summer!

Fallen by A.M. Riley
Good vs Evil. Boy meets vampire. Good triumphs. Your standard fare, with a few plot twisties for giggles.
I found the story interesting but a bit confusing, so be attentive or you’ll miss things. It was the two main characters and figuring out who and what they were which made the story worthwhile for me, rather than the plot.

Groovy Kind of Love by Pecman
A coming-of-age story set in the late 60’s; the music of the era is frequently mentioned in the story and helps to set the scene. I’m not crazy about the writing, although it’s far superior to most of the things I’ve read at the Nifty Archive, but the plot is interesting and a lot more complex than it seems in the beginning.

A Pure and Honest Heart by Zambezi
This isn’t so much a love story so much as it is a coming-of-age story. I’m terribly fond of Brad, the story’s protagonist, because he’s so good. He’s an ideal man in an old-fashioned way; honest and upright and all about standing up for the weak and abused. A Pure and Honest Heart definitely celebrates the triumph of morality, something one sees rarely in modern fiction and almost never in fanfic.
