Horatio Hornblower/The Scarlet Pimpernel

Set after The Duel/The Even Chance. Jamie Bamber, who played Archie Kennedy, also played Tony Dewhurst in The Scarlet Pimpernel. After Archie is lost at sea, Horatio meets his doppelgänger at a party.

The title should tell you that this isn’t a story; it’s a Hornblower rec list. I already put a link to this on the links page, but if you’re anything like me, you almost never check other people’s link pages unless you’re totally desperate. And this site deserves to be seen.

Basically, it’s a series of posts made on FairestCat’s livejournal; each post is a list of Hornblower fanfic recs with a theme: a particular pairing, stories set during a particular episode, that kind of thing. I’ve already read quite a few of the stories that she’s recommended, but I won’t be rec’ing all of them myself, so you might want to hop on over and take a look.

The stories feature a number of different pairings and ratings, so there should be something there for everyone.

Out of all of the Janis Cortese fics I could have recommended, I chose this one mostly because it features Midshipman Wellard, for whom I have a great fondness. Aside from that, it is one of her best stories, in my opinion, though fairly short.

For once, Archie is the hero with an adoring admirer.

Not too long, but not too short, either. Archie and Horatio attend a party, then to Vauxhall Gardens. They…talk.

This is actually the main story in a series; it has both prequels and sequels, but this is as good a place as any to start reading. Despite the numerous overlapping pairings, the tone manages to stay relatively faithful to its historical period. And I have to admit that I’m as much of a sucker for Edrington as for Archie Kennedy.

Horatio Hornblower/Sharpe novels

For a man who appears very little in either the books or the movies, and never even gets a first name, Major Lord Edrington makes quite a few crossover appearances. This time he and Richard Sharpe end up cut off from their retreating army and have to rely on each other to survive. I especially enjoyed Sharpe’s first impression of Edrington – he certainly seems to rub people the wrong way.

Quite a good story, well-written and well-researched.

Okay, it’s not a story, it’s a songvid. You can download it in a bunch of formats on her page. This song has become the Hornblower song for me. I love it.

It’s canon that Horatio arrived on Justinian and met Archie before Simpson returned. I’m not sure if Archie’s background here contradicts canon or just fanon, but I’m not sure that I care, either.
